Jay Z has done it again being booked to perform @ Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which takes place this April 16, 17, 18 in Indio, California. Jay-Z's sharing the bill marks the first time a mainstream hip-hop artist has headlined the rock-centric 11-year-old festival.
The three-day event will feature more than 130 acts, including Thom Yorke???? (the Radiohead frontman's side project), LCD Soundsystem, MGMT, and Corinne Bailey Rae.
Jay-Z caught flak two years ago when it was announced that he would headline the largest Greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world: Glastonbury Festival 2008
Noel Gallagher, the controversial former lead guitarist of Oasis, blasted Glastonbury organizers for booking Jay-Z as the top act. "Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music," Gallagher told BBC News. "I don't know about it. But I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong."
But Jay-Z wasn't fazed by Gallagher's apprehension. In fact, he one-upped Gallagher at the event. Jay-Z opened his Glastonbury set by playing a recording of Gallagher's quote. Holding a guitar, Jay-Z sang one of Oasis' biggest hits, "Wonderwall," a song that expresses adoration for a special someone. Then he segued into his own "99 Problems."
The crowd embraced Jay-Z, sang along, and even laughed, the Guardian reported.
When asked about Gallagher's objection to introducing hip-hop at the event, Jay-Z said the Oasis frontman was unreasonable. "We have to respect each other's genre of music and move forward," Jay-Z told The Sun.
Rick Savage, a personality on Los Angeles' leading rock station KROQ, does not expect such an adverse reaction from Jay-Z's Coachella billing.
"I love that Jay is playing Coachella," Savage said. "I think it's great for not only him, but also Coachella. He might be the only hip-hop artist that will be embraced by the ‘rock' audience. Even the indie snobs love Jay."
