MEXICICAN DRUG CARTELS CLAIMS MORE VICTIMS

Last week 2 high school students were shot and killed in Ciudad Juarez while at a car dealership. In March 2010 a couple associated with the U.S. consulate were also killed in Juarez. In October 2010 a couple was fired upon as they returned to the U.S. from a sightseeing trip along the U.S. border near Matamoros. David Hartley was killed, while his wife Tiffany, barely escaped with her life.

Now comes word that two U.S. ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) were ambushed yesterday (February 15) at what they thought was a security checkpoint 100 miles outside of Mexico City.

20 YEAR OLD STUDENT IS TOP COP IN ONE MEXICAN CITY

Some headlines are hailing her as the bravest woman in Mexicon or the craziest.. Marisol Valles Garcia, all of 20 years old, says she's just tired of everyone being afraid.

Valles Garcia, a criminology student, became the police chief this week of Praxedis G. Guerrero, one of the most violent municipalities in the border state of Chihuahua. She was the only person who accepted the top job in a police force whose officers have been abducted and even killed.
"Yes, there is fear," Valles Garcia said Wednesday in an interview with CNN en Español. "It's like all human beings. There will always be fear, but what we want to achieve in our municipality is tranquility and security."
There's good reason for the fear. Just this past weekend, a 59-year-old local mayor, Rito Grado Serrano, and his 37-year-old son, Rogoberto Grado Villa, were killed in a house in which they they were hiding in nearby Ciudad Juarez. Another area mayor was killed in June.
Juarez is the bloodiest city in Mexico, with a reported 2,500 people killed in drug violence this year. Praxedis G. Guerrero is located about 35 miles southeast of Ciudad Juarez. Both are in the state of Chihuahua, which borders Texas.

72 BODIES FOUND BY MEXICAN POLICE

The bodies, 58 of which were men and 14 women, were found above ground in a section of a ranch about 14 miles (22 km) away from the town of San Fernando. The Navy called it one of the largest discoveries of dead bodies in Mexico's 4 year-old war on organized crime.

Members of the Mexican Navy were tipped off about the gruesome, makeshift, burial ground after encountering a man who was suffering from a gunshot wound. The man said he had been injured by a criminal gang, according to a statement released by the Navy.

MEXICO CONSIDERING DRUG LEGALIZATION

President Felipe Calderon said he would consider a debate on legalizing drugs Tuesday as his government announced that more than 28,000 people have been killed in drug violence since he launched a crackdown against cartels in 2006.

Intelligence agency director Guillermo Valdes also said authorities have confiscated about 84,000 weapons and made total cash seizures of $411 million in U.S. currency and $26 million worth in pesos (330 million pesos).
Valdes released the statistics during a meeting with Calderon and representatives of business and civic groups, where attendees exploring ways to improve Mexico's anti-drug strategy called on the government to open a debate on legalization.
Calderon said he has taken note of the idea of legally regulating drugs in the past. Hey if it works everyone will be headed back to Mexico.

SHERIFF RECEIVES DEATH THREATS

On the day parts of Arizona's immigration law, SB 1070, went into effect, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is in the news for another reason: there's a price on his head - allegedly offered by a Mexican drug cartel.
It's offering a million dollars for Sheriff Joe Arpaio's head and offering a thousand dollars for anyone who wants to join the Mexican cartel."

TOLD YALL MEXICO IS NO JOKE

The warden of a prison in the northern state of Durango is under arrest on suspicion she let inmates leave the facility to carry out killings in the nearby city of Torreon, the Mexican Attorney General’s Office said.

In custody along with warden Margarita Rojas Rodriguez are her deputy, Francisco Carlos Alberto Uranga, and prison security chiefs Roberto Enriquez Aguayo and Jose Guadalupe Diaz Ordaz, as well as several guards.
The prison personnel are charged in connection with more than 30 deaths in Torreon, including last week’s massacre of 17 people attending a birthday party at a rented hall, AG office spokesman Ricardo Najera said.
Rojas is accused of allowing inmates to leave Cereso Dos prison at night to carry out killings with active help from some of the guards.
The inmates returned to their cells after the crimes.
“The criminals commit their executions as part of settling scores with members of bands linked to organized crime,” Najera said, adding that a search of Cereso Dos prison turned up four assault rifles used in the July 18 killings at Torreon’s Italia Inn.
Sunday’s arrests came days after the appearance on the Internet of a video in a which a Lerdo, Durango, police officer confesses to being on the payroll of a crime boss and points to warden Rojas’ alleged role in the Torreon murders

THEY NOT PLAYING IN MEXICO

Police discovered six dead bodies in a cavern near the tourist resort of Cancun on Sunday, three of them cut open and their hearts removed.

Authorities are investigating the identities of the four men and two women found dead in the natural cave, said Francisco Alor, the Quintana Roo state attorney general.
"They were apparently tortured and their chests were opened to remove the hearts," Alor's office said later in a statement.
Three of the bodies had the letter "Z" carved on their abdomens – a possible reference to the Zeta drug gang, though officials did not make an explicit connection to cartel violence that has plagued many parts of Mexico.
More than 22,700 people have died nationwide in drug violence since late 2006, when President Felipe Calderon sent soldiers and federal police to battle the cartels.
Remind me not to go to Mexico anytime soon.

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May”) is a voluntarily observed holiday that commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. It is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States. While Cinco de Mayo has limited significance nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

THE REAL DRUG DEALERS ARE ACROSS THE BORDER

Three people connected to the U.S. consulate in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, were killed in two drive-by shootings, a senior White House official told CNN Sunday.

Two of the victims were an American employee at the consulate and her U.S. citizen husband. Their 1-year-old child, who was in a vehicle with the couple at the time of the shooting, survived the incident, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
The American couple were found dead inside a white Toyota RAV4 with Texas license plates, according to the Chihuahua state attorney general's office.
The woman was shot in the neck and left arm, while the man had a bullet wound near his right eye, officials said.
"We know that the U.S. citizens were targeted," Juarez Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz told CNN, saying a police officer witnessed a car shooting at the Americans' car. "We know they were chasing them. We know they wanted to kill them."
The Americans were identified as Arthur Redelfs, 34, and Lesley Enriquez by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, where Redelfs worked as a detention officer.
Redelfs was a 10-year veteran of the department, according to Jesse Tovar, a spokesman for the sheriff's office.
"On behalf of the men and women of the Sheriff's Office, I would like to extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family during this difficult time," said Sheriff Richard Wiles. "Our thoughts and prayers are with them."

About 10 minutes before authorities received the call, they were alerted to a body inside a 2003 Honda Pilot. Inside was the husband of the Mexican employee, identified as Jorge Alberto Salcido Ceniceros, 37. Reyes said the victim was a state police officer who was married to a Mexican employee at the U.S. consulate.

Two children, 4 and 7, were injured in that shooting and transported to the hospital, the attorney general's office said.
Police recovered two shells at that scene from an assault rifle, authorities said.
